scans. We have not found any studies of MRI-induced injury to healthcare personnel from long-term exposure to EMFs or any studies correlating exposure levels to disease. Anesthesia personnel who provide limited or occasional care in the MRI environment run a risk of exposure to EMFs. Anesthesia providers should carefully consider their anesthetic technique to minimize the time spent in the MRI magnet room. In the future, exposure limits to EMFs should be recorded by anesthesia personnel to facilitate future epidemiologic studies to determine EMF exposure rates. More research is required in developing anesthetic techniques to minimize the EMF exposure limits.

The assessment of memory under total intravenous anesthesia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In this study, we aimed to assess implicit and explicit memory in patients who had abdominal surgery under total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with propofol and remifentanil, in which anesthesia level was controlled by bispectral index (BIS) monitoring. METHOD Total intravenous anesthesia was administered to 60 adult patients, to obtain BIS levels of 40-60. Patients ...

Awareness and information processing in general anesthesia.

Although general anesthesia produces an apparent loss of consciousness, there is some reason to believe that, at least under some circumstances, surgical events may influence post-operative experience, thoughts and action as implicit memories. This paper summarizes a number of recent experiments in which adequately anesthetized patients show implicit, but not explicit, memory for surgical event...

Investigation of implicit memory during isoflurane anesthesia for elective surgery using the process dissociation procedure.

BACKGROUND This prospective study evaluated memory function during general anesthesia for elective surgery and its relation to depth of hypnotic state. The authors also compared memory function in anesthetized and nonanesthetized subjects. METHODS Words were played for 70 min via headphones to 48 patients (aged 18-70 yr) after induction of general anesthesia for elective surgery. Patients wer...

Williams, Watts, Macleod and Mathews' (1988) model of anxiety and depression leads to the prediction that anxious patients will show mood – congreuent implicit memory bias, while depressed patients will show mood-congruent explicit memory bias.Although this prediction has been supported by some researchers (Denny & Hunt, 1992 mathews, Moog, et al , 1989 watkins, et al, 1992), the reliability ...

Does Memory Priming during Anesthesia Matter?

THE article in this issue of ANESTHESIOLOGY by IselinChaves et al. consolidates recent evidence that memory “priming” persists during adequate anesthesia. We are now in a position to move on from wondering whether memory priming happens during anesthesia to asking how much happens, under what conditions does it happen, and what is its impact on patients’ well-being. Research in psychology shows...
